WHITE WAVE Dance Company to Host 21st Annual Dumbo Virtual Dance Festival

WHITE WAVE Dance presents the 21st annual Dumbo Virtual Dance Festival, June 23-26, 2022. This spectacular four-day show features sixty companies with more than 350 artists from New York and around the world, showcasing works in color, chamber and on a large scale. The festival begins with a virtual opening night celebration gala on June 23, 2022 at 7 p.m. The evening will be hosted by distinguished guest speakers including philanthropist and patron of WHITE WAVE Gerald Appelstein, SummerStage NYC dance curator Danni Gee, Jennifer Muller/Artistic Director of The Works Jennifer Muller, former board member of WHITE WAVE and WHITE WAVE alumnus Angel Ludo Scheffer Board Chair Thera Marshall, longtime WHITE WAVE supporter and selection committee member Pascal Rekoert, and board members of the company and the artistic director of WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim.

Speakers will punctuate the evening from seven sensational contemporary dance troupes: Buglisi Dance Theatre, ALAH, Limón2, Hyonok Kim Dance Arts and two of South Korea’s most eclectic companies: chagmu center|KIM / MEA JA, UBIN Dance| Na-Hyun Lee and WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company.

The festival continues on June 24 with performances at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.; June 25 with performances at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and June 26 at 4 and 6 p.m. – with a grand finale at 8 p.m. There is also a family program on June 26, celebrating the next generation of dancers and their parents. WHITE WAVE’s Kids Can Dance educational program will offer a free Zoom hip-hop and modern dance class from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., led by a member of the company. WHITE WAVE travels the world in search of today’s most innovative dancers, both emerging and established, and brings them together virtually for an extended weekend, while paying special attention to new, emerging and experimental. This year, WHITE WAVE Dance will select two outstanding companies for the opportunity to perform at the New Dance Festival 2023 in Korea and the Detroit City Dance Festival 2022. These two highly regarded festivals will provide companies with another fantastic opportunity for exposure, promotion and additional performance. All participating VDDF companies will be carefully screened and informed after the grand finale.

Founded by Korean-born Young Soon Kim in 1988, WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company is dedicated to inspiring audiences through multi-dimensional dance productions reflecting both modern and timeless themes and philosophies. We constantly strive to be a powerful stimulus for progress and evolution in the world of dance and the arts. By producing dance concerts, festivals and educational activities, WHITE WAVE Dance offers both new and seasoned choreographers/companies an encouraging environment where they can create, collaborate and present new work in the undisputed dance capital of the world, New York. .

WHITE WAVE established DDF in 2001 in response to the dance community‘s need for performance opportunities that would not only showcase, but also produce the work of emerging choreographers at minimal cost to the artist. The festival is now recognized as New York’s most prestigious gathering of pioneering choreography, encouraging experimentation, creativity and originality.

To date, WHITE WAVE Dance has proudly presented over 3,000 choreographers/dance companies and over 22,500 performers to a total of over 90,500 spectators. In October 2021, WHITE WAVE Dance presented three free performances of their new production, iyouuswe II (I-You-Us-We-Two), on October 9 and 30, 2021 at DUMBO Archway, and two shows at the Home of WHITE WAVE Dance at 5 p.m. as part of the City Artist Corps Grant Initiative.

“iyouuswe II, A Dance Film” was selected as a finalist of the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival, the Paris International Short Film Festival, the Vancouver Independent Film Festival and an OFFICIAL SELECTION at the International Short Film Festival London 2021, Espoo International Film Festival Digi-Dance (Finland) and Experimental, Dance, Music Film Festival (Canada).
