the first book on the music of women in dance
Started as a crowdfunding project, the The Lady Of The House Book is the first book on women in dance music; it comprises 150 artists, DJs, managers, and more.
Lady of the House is a large-scale hardcover book that highlights the contributions of women who pioneered the dance scene and continue to do so today. The book goes back to the beginnings of dance music, with interviews and unpublished images. With contributions from those who were there in the beginning, as well as current advocates who help keep the scene alive, thriving, and ever-changing. Candi Staton, Barbara Tucker, Sam Divine, Charlotte de Witte, Nina Kraviz and Jocelyn Brown are among the featured DJs, producers, artists, promoters and executives. The book is dedicated to the legendary disco and soul singer Loleatta Holloway and includes a special preface by electronic music legend Carl Cox.
This book is an invaluable testimony to the evolution of dance music and the central role of women within it, with over 150 women sharing their stories and experiences. Lady of the House talks to women about being creative and doing what they love to do, not just women on the stage. They wanted to ensure that the legacy of women’s power is passed on to future generations at a time when so much change is taking place and so much inequality is exposed. Stories of determination, empowerment, inspiration, challenges, passion, education, goals, and dream realization abound in the interviews.
Book authors will donate £ 1 for every book sold at Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) Savenightlife CIC. Savenightlife CIC will use the funds to expand its #WeAreAllInThisTogether, Diversity & Inclusion initiative. In particular, it will be used to ensure that all women in industry have equal access to equal rights and protection.
