The City celebrates National Youth Week with free and accessible activities

From May 1, all activities are walk-in and available on a first-come, first-served basis

The city celebrates National Youth Week starting May 1 with free recreational and cultural activities for young people to inspire, engage and connect.

“National Youth Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate young people and their positive contributions to the community,” said Steve Lee-Young, Manager of Recreation and Culture Programs. “We provide free and accessible activities for young people to connect with their peers, learn new skills and be inspired. »

Throughout the week, Barrie youth aged 13 to 19 are invited to participate in activities offered as part of National Youth Week. All activities are walk-in and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Some of the activities on offer include:

  • A “Youth Bosses” event, where young people can work with experts from the Small Business Center to collaborate on starting a business and developing a business plan (held on May 3);
  • A series of workshops called “Creator’s College”, to celebrate young content creators. Workshop themes include: Tik Tok dancing, social media safety and content creation (all three workshops are held on May 5);
  • A “takeover” by the youth of the Peggy Hill community center, with an electronic sports tournament, a physical training camp, a free throwing contest, a Nerf battle and a swim (held on 6 may);
  • A drop-in night for young people with a special theme (held on May 6);
  • Skating/swimming (organized on different dates).

From May 2-8, the existing lights of the Five Points Theatre, presented by Pratt Homes & Pratt Development, and the lights above the canopy of Meridian Place will turn green as part of the “Shine Green” campaign for the Week of children’s mental health. .

National Youth Week ends on May 7, which is also National Child and Youth Mental Health Day. To mark this day, the city will offer youth and family-friendly activities at the Barrie Wellness Fair at Meridian Place.
