The best trad music and dance festival in the region is back this summer

Damien O’Kane and Ron Block will drop their fingers in July

From July 8-10, the lineup features top musicians, including 14-time Grammy winner Ron Block.

The festival is supported by the Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Strategic Major Events Fund and sponsored by Five Kingdoms Brewery in Whithorn, which provides first class entertainment.

Free tune and song sessions will take place at local hostels throughout the weekend, while on July 9 Minnigraff hosts a Highland Dance competition.

The weekend will also see those under 25 benefit from free entry to a wide range of musical workshops led by exceptional musicians from the festival.

Big gigs kick off in the festival marquee behind the Vault Arts Center in Newton Stewart with fast fleet foot fuel in the form of double banjo players Damien O’Kane and Ron Block.

O’Kane describes Block as a “god of banjo rock,” which is hardly surprising given Block’s 14 Grammys — mostly won as a member of Union Station.

July 9 brings an evening of piping led by John McSherry and Francis McIIduff on a bill that includes Malin Makes Music and Megan Nic Fhionnghaile.

While on July 10, with Gaelic singer Mairi McGillivray and newcomer Heather Cartwright, Blue Rose Code will perform as a trio with a traditional set.
