February activities at Wareham Council on Aging

WAREHAM – Don’t let a little snow stop you from enjoying Council on Aging activities this month! It’s great to get out of the house, see the friendly faces at the One Stop Center and stay active, so mark your calendars and plan ahead. Remember that if schools are closed due to weather, the Senior Center is also closed. All activities will take place at the Multiservices Centre, 48 Marion Road, unless otherwise specified.

February 4: Acrylic Painting Day from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This two-hour class will have you walking away with a finished work of art! The fee is $15 and all materials will be provided. Space is limited, so please register by calling 508-291-3130.

February 7: Current affairs discussion moderated by Judith Grassi at 10 a.m. in the Salon du Gym. Ms. Grassi will lead participants in a discussion of city, country and international events. We hope to continue these discussions on a monthly basis. Call 508-291-3130 to register.

February 8: Craft class at 1 p.m. at the Cranberry Café. Back by popular demand, Barbara Pelletier is back with her fun craft classes with a different craft every month. Registration is required by calling 508-219-3130. A $2 donation is requested.

February 9 and 23: The Wednesday walking group will meet at the YMCA at 10:30 a.m. The Wareham Middle School track is the regular location weather permitting. Call 508-291-3130 to register. Walking is great exercise, and the group is led by volunteer leader Deborah Sandoli, a retired international walking and running coach, wellness nurse and psychologist.

February 11: Garden Therapy at 10:30 am generously offered by the Wareham Garden Club. Create a beautiful garden arrangement under the guidance of a Garden Club member. Book early by calling 508-291-3130.

February 16: VALENTINE’S DAY LUNCH at 11:30 a.m. with a menu of baked ziti and meatball with sauce and garlic roll. A chocolate fondant is provided for dessert. Please reserve the week before by calling Cheryl at 508-291-3100 ext. 6514. A donation of $2.50 is suggested and appreciated.

February 23: Bingo following lunch. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and bingo starts at 12:30 p.m. Lunch is BBQ pulled pork. Bingo is cash only and the cards cost 50 cents each. A monthly raffle by the Advocates for Wareham Seniors will also take place from February. The first draw will be a personal tablet. Tickets are $1 each or 8 for $5.

February 23: Greeting card class at 9:15 a.m. Enough materials will be provided to make 4-5 finished cards. Sign up for this fun class by calling 508-291-3130. A $3 donation is requested.

February 25: Food delivery from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. If you signed up with the Greater Boston Food Bank, pick up your order at the Council on Aging. Call 508-291-3130 for more information.

March 9-30: Four-week beginner’s acrylic painting course Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The fee is $40 and includes all materials needed to learn beginner techniques. Register early. Dial 508-291-3130.

MONTHLY ACTIVITIES CONTINUE:

Mahjong: The Cranberry Café is the venue for Mahjong games on Tuesdays from 1 p.m.

Cribbage: Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon, enjoy a few games of Cribbage in room 208.

Make Mats for the Homeless: All materials are provided for this community service on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. in room 102.

Knitters gather: Mondays at 10 a.m. Beginners and beginners should call 508 219-3130 to register.

Physical activities at the Multiservices Centre: Chair volleyball on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Tai Chi is Tuesdays at 1:15 p.m. and Chair Yoga continues with Pam on Thursdays at 2 p.m.

Fitness classes with Marge Blinstrub temporarily at Wareham’s Free Library, begin Monday—Circuit classes 9-10 a.m. at $3 per class; and Fridays — Country Line Dancing 9-10 a.m. at $3 per class. No need to pre-register and pay at the door.

Weekly Coffee and Conversation: Join a lively group of seniors on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Cranberry Café.

Grab and Go lunches continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pick up free meals courtesy of Old Colony Senior Services at the Multiservices Center Handicap Ramp between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Meals must be reserved at least 3 days before the scheduled delivery date by calling 508 -291-3130. The menu is available in the Senior Beacon and on Facebook.

Reminders: Senior Tax Holiday Program forms are available at the COA office.

Volunteers are needed for programs, Meals on Wheels, newsletters, etc. Forms available at the office or call 508-291-3130 for more information.

Preventive dental services offer cleanings, exams, oral cancer screenings and dental care. Services are covered by Mass Health Standard and affordable rates are offered for those without dental insurance. Appointments made or questions answered at 508-827-6725.
